We woke to another bright and sunny day leaving Meriwether Lewis CG around 10 am. We had one last stop in Tennessee before driving along the trace into Alabama.
Our last stop in Tennessee was the area called Sunken Trace. An area where three sections of the original road show how the route was relocated to avoid mud holes. Too difficult to actually see in a picture.
Next we stopped at Rock Spring, a natural spring bubbling from the ground.
The walk along Colbert Creek was really pretty and the walking on the stepping stones was cool. Jewel was a little hesitant at first but once I started across she followed.

It was a fun walk and we enjoyed seeing the beaver dams . It was surprising to see how big they were.
Next we drove over the John Coffee Memorial Bridge a span that crosses Pickwick Lake formed by Pickwick Landing Dam on the Tennessee River.
We took the path to another natural spring and once again enjoyed the quiet around us except for the sound of the rushing water.
The water from the spring is so crystal clear you could catch the fish by hand.
Then it was on to Freedom Hills Overlook and a 0.25 mile hike to Alabama’s highest point on the trace (800 feet).

Off to another cave and Ron the explorer had to go inside to look around.
As Ron was thinking about entering the cave I had to be the voice of reason. There were clear signs indicating that the caves were dangerous and unstable. He took a picture at the mouth of the cave and reluctantly turned back.
Our last stop before heading into Tupelo was the Kosciusko Visitor Center. Then it was on to the Barnes Crossing CG for the night.
